Soil Mechanics में Compressibility का मतलब है कि soil load आने पर कितना compress या settle होती है। यह property foundation design और construction projects में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण होती है क्योंकि excessive settlement से structures को नुकसान पहुँच सकता है। Consolidation soil की compressibility को study करने की main process है।

Soil Compressibility के Types

Soil settlement को मुख्य रूप से तीन parts में classify किया जाता है:

1. Immediate Settlement (Elastic Settlement)

यह settlement load लगने के तुरंत बाद होती है और soil के elastic deformation की वजह से होती है। यह coarse-grained soils (जैसे sand और gravel) में ज्यादा देखने को मिलती है। Immediate settlement water drainage से प्रभावित नहीं होती।

2. Primary Consolidation Settlement

यह settlement fine-grained soils (जैसे clay) में होती है। जब load soil पर लगाया जाता है तो pore water pressure increase हो जाता है और धीरे-धीरे water बाहर निकलता है। इस process के दौरान soil volume reduce होता है और settlement होता है। इसे ही primary consolidation कहते हैं।

3. Secondary Compression Settlement

जब primary consolidation complete हो जाता है, तब भी soil में particles के rearrangement और creep की वजह से settlement होता रहता है। इसे secondary compression कहते हैं। यह विशेष रूप से organic soils और compressible clays में ज्यादा होता है।
