Direct Shear Test soil mechanics में shear strength parameters (cohesion c और angle of internal friction φ) determine करने के लिए सबसे simple और commonly used test है। इस test से soil की shear strength को direct तरीके से measure किया जाता है।

Direct Shear Test का Principle

इस test का principle यह है कि soil sample को दो हिस्सों में divide किए गए shear box में रखा जाता है और फिर gradually horizontal shear force apply किया जाता है जब तक sample fail न हो जाए। Applied shear force और corresponding normal stress से shear strength parameters निकाले जाते हैं।

Apparatus

• Shear box (दो हिस्सों में divide)
• Loading frame (normal load apply करने के लिए)
• Proving ring (shear force measure करने के लिए)
• Dial gauges (displacement measure करने के लिए)
• Weights (normal load के लिए)

Direct Shear Test करने की Procedure

1. Soil sample prepare करके shear box में रखें।
2. Normal load (σ) apply करें।
3. Shear force gradually increase करें।
4. Shear displacement और shear load record करें।
5. Sample के fail होने तक loading जारी रखें।

Graphical Representation

Applied shear stress (τ) vs normal stress (σ) graph plot करके एक straight line मिलती है, जो Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope represent करती है। इसी से c और φ values determine की जाती हैं।

Advantages

✔ Cohesionless soils (sand, gravel) के लिए reliable results देता है।

Limitations

✘ Failure plane pre-defined होता है।
✘ Clay soils के लिए accurate नहीं होता।
✘ Pore water pressure measure नहीं किया जा सकता।
