Wood Defects ऐसे दोष या imperfections होते हैं जो timber की strength, durability और appearance को प्रभावित करते हैं। ये defects लकड़ी की growth, cutting या seasoning के दौरान उत्पन्न हो सकते हैं।

Construction में उपयोग से पहले timber को ठीक से season और treat करना बहुत आवश्यक है ताकि defects और decay को रोका जा सके।

Wood Defects की परिभाषा (Definition)

“Wood defects are irregularities or imperfections in the structure of timber that reduce its strength, appearance, or utility.”

Wood Defects के प्रकार (Types of Wood Defects)

Wood defects को उनके कारणों के आधार पर चार मुख्य वर्गों में बाँटा जाता है:

1️⃣ Natural Defects (प्राकृतिक दोष)

• Knots: शाखाओं के जुड़ने से बनने वाले गोल निशान।
• Shakes: लकड़ी में दरारें जैसे heart shake, ring shake।
• Twist & Warp: गलत drying से shape बदलना।
• Heart Rot: फंगल infection से अंदरूनी सड़न।

2️⃣ Seasoning Defects (सुखाने के दोष)

• Checks: surface cracks due to rapid drying।
• Collapse: excessive shrinkage due to high temperature।
• Honeycombing: internal cracking due to improper seasoning।

3️⃣ Conversion Defects (कटाई के दौरान दोष)

• Improper sawing से uneven grains।
• Machine burns या surface roughness।

4️⃣ Biological Defects (जैविक दोष)

• Termite Attack: कीड़ों द्वारा नुकसान।
• Fungal Decay: moisture से उत्पन्न deterioration।
• Borer Holes: लकड़ी में छोटे कीड़े छेद कर देते हैं।

Timber Seasoning (लकड़ी को सुखाना)

Seasoning का उद्देश्य लकड़ी में मौजूद moisture को कम करना है ताकि strength और durability बढ़ सके।

• Natural Seasoning: हवा में धीरे-धीरे सूखाना (6–12 महीने)।
• Artificial Seasoning: Kiln में controlled heating द्वारा तेजी से सुखाना।

Timber Treatment (लकड़ी को सुरक्षित करने के उपाय)

Timber को biological attack से बचाने के लिए chemical preservatives का उपयोग किया जाता है:

• Coal tar या creosote coating।
• Water-soluble preservatives (Copper sulphate, Sodium fluoride)।
• Pressure treatment for deep penetration।
