Moulding Sand Casting Process का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण Material है। Foundry Industry में Mould तैयार करने के लिए विशेष प्रकार की Sand का उपयोग किया जाता है जिसे Moulding Sand कहते हैं। Molten Metal को Mould Cavity में डालने के बाद यही Sand Casting को आवश्यक Shape प्रदान करती है। अच्छी Quality की Moulding Sand Casting की Accuracy, Surface Finish तथा Strength को सीधे प्रभावित करती है।

Definition of Moulding Sand

Casting Process में Mould बनाने के लिए उपयोग की जाने वाली विशेष प्रकार की Sand को Moulding Sand कहा जाता है। यह Silica Sand तथा अन्य Additives का मिश्रण होती है जिसमें उच्च तापमान सहन करने की क्षमता होती है।

Properties of Good Moulding Sand

1. Refractoriness

Refractoriness वह गुण है जिसके कारण Moulding Sand अत्यधिक High Temperature पर भी Melt नहीं होती तथा अपनी Shape बनाए रखती है।

2. Permeability

Permeability वह गुण है जिसके कारण Molten Metal से उत्पन्न Gases आसानी से Mould के बाहर निकल जाती हैं। यदि Permeability कम होगी तो Blow Holes उत्पन्न हो सकते हैं।

3. Strength

Moulding Sand में पर्याप्त Strength होनी चाहिए ताकि Pouring के समय Mould टूटे नहीं तथा अपनी Shape बनाए रखे।

Plasticity वह गुण है जिसके कारण Sand Pattern के चारों ओर आसानी से Desired Shape ग्रहण कर लेती है।

5. Adhesiveness

Adhesiveness वह गुण है जिसके कारण Moulding Sand Moulding Box की Surface से चिपकी रहती है।

6. Cohesiveness

Cohesiveness वह गुण है जिसके कारण Sand Particles आपस में मजबूती से जुड़े रहते हैं और Mould को Strength प्रदान करते हैं।

7. Flowability

Flowability वह गुण है जिसके कारण Sand आसानी से Pattern के चारों ओर Fill होकर उसकी प्रत्येक Detail को Reproduce कर सकती है।

8. Collapsibility

Solidification के बाद Casting को आसानी से Mould से निकालने की क्षमता को Collapsibility कहते हैं।

Types of Moulding Sand

1. Green Sand

Green Sand सबसे अधिक उपयोग होने वाली Moulding Sand है। इसमें Moisture उपस्थित रहती है तथा Mould को Dry किए बिना सीधे Casting की जाती है। यह Economical होने के कारण सामान्य Foundry Work में सबसे अधिक उपयोग की जाती है।

2. Dry Sand

3. Facing Sand

Facing Sand वह Moulding Sand होती है जो सीधे Molten Metal के संपर्क में आती है। इसमें उच्च गुणवत्ता वाली Silica Sand तथा विशेष Additives मिलाए जाते हैं ताकि Casting की Surface Finish अच्छी प्राप्त हो तथा Sand Burning जैसी समस्याएँ कम हों।

4. Backing Sand

5. Core Sand

Core Sand का उपयोग Casting के अंदर Hollow Portion या Internal Cavity बनाने के लिए किया जाता है। इसमें सामान्यतः Silica Sand के साथ Oil Binder या Resin Binder का उपयोग किया जाता है जिससे इसकी Strength अधिक हो जाती है।
