Viscosity and Viscosity Index
🔹 Viscosity
🔹 Definition of Viscosity
"The resistance offered by a liquid to its flow is known as viscosity."
🔹 Example of Viscosity
🔹 Cause of Viscosity
🔹 Types of Viscosity
1. Dynamic Viscosity (Absolute Viscosity)
Pascal Second (Pa.s)
2. Kinematic Viscosity
Formula:
ν = η / ρ
- ν = Kinematic Viscosity
- η = Dynamic Viscosity
- ρ = Density
Unit: Stoke (St)
🔹 Importance of Viscosity
- Lubricating Film Formation
- Wear Reduction
- Heat Removal
- Machine Efficiency Improvement
- Power Consumption Control
🔹 Effect of Temperature on Viscosity
| Temperature | Viscosity |
|---|---|
| Low Temperature | High Viscosity |
| High Temperature | Low Viscosity |
🔹 Viscosity Index (VI)
🔹 Definition of Viscosity Index
"Viscosity Index is an empirical number which indicates the effect of temperature on the viscosity of lubricating oil."
🔹 Significance of Viscosity Index
- High VI Lubricants
🔹 Classification Based on Viscosity Index
| Viscosity Index | Quality |
|---|---|
| 0 - 35 | Poor |
| 35 - 80 | Medium |
| 80 - 120 | Good |
| Above 120 | Excellent |
🔹 Characteristics of High VI Lubricants
- Stable Performance
- Better Temperature Resistance
- Improved Engine Protection
- Long Service Life
- Reduced Oil Consumption
🔹 Characteristics of Low VI Lubricants
- Large Viscosity Variation
- Poor High Temperature Performance
- Reduced Lubrication Efficiency
- Short Service Life
🔹 Determination of Viscosity
- Redwood Viscometer
- Saybolt Viscometer
- Engler Viscometer
- Ostwald Viscometer
🔹 Redwood Viscometer
🔹 Advantages of High Viscosity Index Oil
- Better Engine Performance
- Fuel Economy
- Reduced Wear
- Longer Equipment Life
- Stable Lubrication
🔹 Applications
- Automobile Engines
- Aircraft Engines
- Industrial Machinery
- Hydraulic Systems
- Gear Boxes
- Power Plants
🔹 Comparison Between Viscosity and Viscosity Index
| Basis | Viscosity | Viscosity Index |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Resistance to Flow | Effect of Temperature on Viscosity |
| Unit | Poise / Pa.s | No Unit |
| Nature | Physical Property | Empirical Number |
| Importance | Lubrication Quality | Temperature Stability |
🔹 Viva Questions
- Viscosity
- Viscosity Index
- High Viscosity Index Oil
- Redwood Viscometer
🔹 Exam Oriented Important Questions
- Viscosity
- Viscosity Index
- High Viscosity Index Lubricants
