Types of Polymerization (पॉलिमरीकरण के प्रकार)
Classification
- Addition Polymerization
- Condensation Polymerization
🔹 Addition Polymerization (योगात्मक पॉलिमरीकरण)
🔹 Definition of Addition Polymerization
"Addition Polymerization is the process in which a large number of unsaturated monomers combine together without elimination of any small molecule to form a polymer."
🔹 Characteristics of Addition Polymerization
- Unsaturated Monomers Participate
- No By-product Formation
- Chain Growth Process
- Rapid Polymer Formation
- High Molecular Weight Polymer Produced
🔹 General Reaction
n(CH₂=CH₂) → (-CH₂-CH₂-)n
Ethylene → Polyethylene
🔹 Mechanism of Addition Polymerization
1. Initiation Step
2. Propagation Step
3. Termination Step
🔹 Examples of Addition Polymerization
| Monomer | Polymer |
|---|---|
| Ethylene | Polyethylene |
| Propylene | Polypropylene |

🔹 Condensation Polymerization (संघनन पॉलिमरीकरण)
🔹 Definition of Condensation Polymerization
"Condensation Polymerization is a polymerization process in which monomers combine together with elimination of small molecules such as water, HCl or alcohol."
🔹 Characteristics of Condensation Polymerization
- Functional Groups Required
- By-products Formed
- Step Growth Process
- Relatively Slow Reaction
- Complex Polymer Structure
🔹 General Reaction
Monomer A + Monomer B → Polymer + Small Molecule
🔹 Example of Condensation Polymerization
Hexamethylene Diamine + Adipic Acid → Nylon-6,6 + Water
🔹 Formation of Nylon-6,6
Nylon-6,6 Condensation Polymerization
🔹 Examples of Condensation Polymers
| Monomers | Polymer |
|---|---|
| Hexamethylene Diamine + Adipic Acid | Nylon-6,6 |
| Ethylene Glycol + Terephthalic Acid | Polyester |
| Phenol + Formaldehyde | Bakelite |
| Urea + Formaldehyde | Urea Formaldehyde Resin |
🔹 Advantages of Condensation Polymerization
- Strong Polymers Produced
- High Mechanical Strength
- Heat Resistance
- Excellent Chemical Resistance
🔹 Applications of Condensation Polymers
- Textile Fibers
- Engineering Plastics
- Electrical Components
- Adhesives
- Laminates
🔹 Difference Between Addition and Condensation Polymerization
| Basis | Addition Polymerization | Condensation Polymerization |
|---|---|---|
| Monomers | Unsaturated Monomers | Functional Group Monomers |
| By-product Formation | No | Yes |
| Mechanism | Chain Growth | Step Growth |
| Reaction Speed | Fast | Slow |
| Examples | PVC, Teflon | Nylon, Bakelite |
