Oiliness and Emulsification Number of Lubricants Notes | Engineering Chemistry | RGPV BTech First Year
Oiliness and Emulsification Number of Lubricants
🔹 Oiliness
🔹 Definition of Oiliness
"Oiliness is the property of a lubricant by virtue of which it adheres strongly to metal surfaces and maintains a continuous lubricating film."
🔹 Mechanism of Oiliness
🔹 Factors Affecting Oiliness
- Molecular Structure of Oil
- Presence of Polar Compounds
- Temperature
- Surface Nature of Metal
- Operating Conditions
🔹 Importance of Oiliness
1. Better Lubrication
2. Reduced Wear
Metal Surfaces
3. Improved Machine Life
4. Enhanced Efficiency
Machine Efficiency
🔹 Characteristics of High Oiliness Lubricants
- Strong Surface Adhesion
- Low Friction
- Excellent Wear Protection
- Good Boundary Lubrication Performance
- Long Service Life
🔹 Examples of High Oiliness Oils
- Castor Oil
- Rapeseed Oil
- Lard Oil
- Fatty Oils
🔹 Applications of Oiliness
- Cutting Oils
- Machine Tools
- Bearings
- Heavy Duty Machinery
- Automobile Components
🔹 Emulsification
🔹 Emulsion
- Oil in Water (O/W)
- Water in Oil (W/O)
🔹 Emulsification Number
🔹 Definition of Emulsification Number
"Emulsification Number is the measure of the ability of a lubricating oil to form an emulsion with water."
🔹 Importance of Emulsification Number
- Lubricant Selection
- Cutting Fluid Applications
- Machine Cooling Systems
- Industrial Process Control
- Water Separation Assessment
🔹 High Emulsification Number
Applications
- Cutting Fluids
- Metal Working Operations
- Cooling Lubricants
🔹 Low Emulsification Number
Applications
- Steam Turbines
- Transformer Oils
- Hydraulic Systems
- Gear Oils
🔹 Determination of Emulsification Number
🔹 Comparison Between Oiliness and Emulsification Number
| Basis | Oiliness | Emulsification Number |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Surface Adhesion Property | Water Mixing Property |
| Indicates | Lubrication Quality | Emulsion Formation Ability |
| Importance | Wear Reduction | Cooling Applications |
| Desired Value | High | Depends on Application |
🔹 Characteristics of a Good Lubricant
| Property | Desired Nature |
|---|---|
| Oiliness | High |
| Wear Protection | Excellent |
| Emulsification | Application Specific |
| Thermal Stability | High |
🔹 Industrial Applications
- Metal Cutting Operations
- Automobile Industries
- Machine Tool Industries
- Steel Plants
- Hydraulic Systems
- Power Plants
🔹 Viva Questions
- Oiliness
- Oiliness
- Emulsification Number
🔹 Exam Oriented Important Questions
- Oiliness
- Oiliness
- Emulsification Number
