Linear Measurement सर्वेक्षण (Surveying) की एक महत्वपूर्ण प्रक्रिया है जिसमें दो बिंदुओं (points) के बीच की क्षैतिज दूरी (horizontal distance) को मापा जाता है। यह सर्वेक्षण कार्यों जैसे – road alignment, land measurement, plotting, आदि के लिए अत्यंत आवश्यक है।

Linear Measurement को तीन मुख्य प्रकारों में बाँटा जाता है:

1️⃣ Direct Methods (प्रत्यक्ष विधि)

इस विधि में दूरी को मापने के लिए chain, tape या steel band जैसे उपकरणों का उपयोग किया जाता है। यह सबसे सामान्य और सरल विधि है।

Chain Surveying: Two points के बीच की दूरी मापने के लिए chain (20m, 30m) का प्रयोग।
Tape Measurement: Steel या cloth tape से short distances मापना।
Offset Measurement: Baseline से perpendicular distance मापने के लिए।

Direct method field work में सबसे अधिक प्रयोग होती है क्योंकि यह सस्ती और सटीक होती है।

2️⃣ Optical Methods (दृश्य विधि)

इस विधि में दूरी को line of sight और optical instruments जैसे telescope के माध्यम से मापा जाता है।

Tacheometry: Theodolite द्वारा staff readings से दूरी ज्ञात करना।
Triangulation: Angles और baseline के माध्यम से दूरी की गणना।
Stadia Method: Telescope पर stadia hairs द्वारा readings लेना।

यह विधि hilly और inaccessible areas में उपयोगी होती है जहाँ direct measurement कठिन होती है।

3️⃣ Electronic Methods (इलेक्ट्रॉनिक विधि)

इस विधि में आधुनिक उपकरणों जैसे EDM (Electronic Distance Measurement) और Total Station का उपयोग किया जाता है।

EDM (Electronic Distance Meter): Electromagnetic waves के माध्यम से distance मापी जाती है।
Total Station: Distance, angle और elevation को एक साथ मापने की सुविधा।
GPS Measurement: Satellites signals द्वारा दूरी और स्थिति निर्धारण।

Electronic method अत्यंत सटीक (accurate) और time-efficient होती है, लेकिन इसकी लागत अधिक होती है।

Ranging क्या है? (What is Ranging?)

Ranging वह प्रक्रिया है जिसमें दो बिंदुओं के बीच सीधी रेखा (straight line) निर्धारित की जाती है ताकि मापन कार्य सटीक हो सके।

Ranging के प्रकार (Types of Ranging)

Direct Ranging: जब दोनों end points एक-दूसरे को दिखाई देते हैं। Intermediate points को align करने के लिए ranging rods का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Indirect Ranging: जब दोनों end points एक-दूसरे को दिखाई नहीं देते, तब signals या flags की सहायता से line alignment की जाती है।

Stepping method का प्रयोग करते समय समान स्तर बनाए रखें।
Readings लेते समय observer की आँख rod के top के समान स्तर पर हो।
