ARPANET

ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) को Internet का प्रारम्भिक रूप माना जाता है। इसे 1969 में United States Department of Defense द्वारा विकसित किया गया था। इसका उद्देश्य विभिन्न Research Centers तथा Universities के Computers को जोड़ना था ताकि सुरक्षित तथा तेज़ Data Communication संभव हो सके।

ARPANET में प्रारम्भ में केवल कुछ Computers जुड़े थे, लेकिन बाद में यह Network लगातार विस्तारित होता गया तथा Internet की नींव बन गया।

TCP/IP Development

1970 के दशक में Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) तथा Internet Protocol (IP) विकसित किए गए। 1 January 1983 को ARPANET ने आधिकारिक रूप से TCP/IP Protocol को अपनाया, जिसे Internet के इतिहास का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण चरण माना जाता है।

TCP/IP Protocol ने विभिन्न Networks को एक-दूसरे से जोड़ना संभव बनाया तथा यही आधुनिक Internet की आधारभूत तकनीक बन गई।

NSFNET

1986 में National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) की स्थापना की गई। इसका उद्देश्य Universities तथा Research Institutions को High Speed Networking उपलब्ध कराना था। बाद में NSFNET ने ARPANET का स्थान लिया तथा Internet के तीव्र विस्तार में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।

Birth of World Wide Web (WWW)

1989 में Tim Berners-Lee ने World Wide Web (WWW) का प्रस्ताव रखा। उन्होंने HTML, HTTP तथा URL जैसी Technologies विकसित कीं जिनकी सहायता से Web Pages को Browser में Access करना संभव हुआ। WWW के आने के बाद Internet सामान्य Users के लिए अधिक उपयोगी तथा लोकप्रिय बन गया।

Commercial Internet

1990 के दशक में Internet का व्यावसायिक (Commercial) उपयोग प्रारम्भ हुआ। Internet Service Providers (ISPs) ने आम नागरिकों को Internet सेवाएँ प्रदान करना शुरू किया। इसके बाद E-Commerce, Online Banking, Search Engines, Social Media तथा Digital Business का तेजी से विकास हुआ।

Growth of Internet in India

भारत में Internet की शुरुआत 15 अगस्त 1995 को VSNL (Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited) द्वारा Public Internet Service प्रारम्भ किए जाने से हुई। प्रारम्भ में Internet केवल बड़े शहरों तक सीमित था, लेकिन Broadband, Mobile Internet, 3G, 4G तथा 5G Technologies के विकास के बाद आज भारत विश्व के सबसे बड़े Internet User देशों में शामिल है।
