Caustic Embrittlement (कॉस्टिक एम्ब्रिटलमेंट)
Engineering Chemistry में Boiler Problems के अंतर्गत Caustic Embrittlement एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण विषय है। यह उच्च दाब (High Pressure) Boilers में होने वाली एक विशेष प्रकार की Boiler Corrosion है, जिसके कारण Boiler Metal भंगुर (Brittle) हो जाती है और उसमें Cracks विकसित होने लगते हैं।
🔹 Caustic Embrittlement क्या है?
Boiler Metal का अत्यधिक सांद्र Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) के प्रभाव से भंगुर होकर Cracks विकसित करना Caustic Embrittlement कहलाता है।
यह सामान्यतः Riveted Joints, Bends, Stressed Areas तथा Boiler Plates के किनारों पर अधिक होता है।

🔹 Cause of Caustic Embrittlement
Boiler Water Treatment में कभी-कभी Sodium Carbonate (Na₂CO₃) का उपयोग किया जाता है। उच्च तापमान एवं दाब पर Sodium Carbonate Hydrolysis करके Sodium Hydroxide बनाता है।
Reaction:
Na₂CO₃ + H₂O → 2NaOH + CO₂↑
उत्पन्न NaOH Boiler के सूक्ष्म Cracks एवं Stressed Regions में प्रवेश कर जाता है।
🔹 Mechanism of Caustic Embrittlement
Step 1: Formation of Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium Carbonate से Sodium Hydroxide बनता है।
Step 2: Entry into Cracks
NaOH Boiler Metal के Hairline Cracks तथा Riveted Joints में प्रवेश करता है।
Step 3: Water Evaporation
इन क्षेत्रों में Water Evaporate हो जाता है जिससे NaOH की Concentration बढ़ जाती है।
Step 4: Metal Attack
Concentrated NaOH Iron को Sodium Ferrate में परिवर्तित कर देता है।
Reaction:
Fe + 2NaOH → Na₂FeO₂ + H₂↑
इस अभिक्रिया के कारण Boiler Metal कमजोर होकर Cracks विकसित करने लगती है।

1. Use of Phosphate Treatment
Sodium Carbonate के स्थान पर Sodium Phosphate का उपयोग किया जाता है।

2. Use of Tannins and Lignins
ये Chemicals Protective Coating बनाकर NaOH को Cracks में प्रवेश करने से रोकते हैं।
3. Addition of Sodium Sulphate
Sodium Sulphate NaOH की Concentration को नियंत्रित करने में सहायता करता है।
4. Proper Boiler Water Treatment
Feed Water की उचित Softening एवं Treatment आवश्यक है।

Boiler Design में Stress Concentration कम किया जाता है।

Modern Boilers में Caustic Embrittlement को रोकने के लिए Phosphate Conditioning सबसे अधिक उपयोग की जाती है।
इसमें Sodium Phosphate Boiler Water में मिलाया जाता है जिससे Hardness Salts Sludge के रूप में निकल जाते हैं और NaOH की Concentration नहीं बढ़ती।
